Cleaning and Caring for Your Gemstone Jewelry

In order to keep your gemstone jewelry sparkling like new, you will need to clean it regularly. There are a variety of jewelry cleaning kits on the market, but you've probably got everything you need at home. Check out these tips below on how to clean your gemstones and avoid damaging them.

Cleaning Your Gemstones

To clean your gemstones, you'll need the following supplies:

  • Small bowl
  • Warm water
  • Mild dish detergent
  • Soft bristled toothbrush

Allow your gemstone jewelry to soak in the soapy solution for a few minutes. When you remove it, gently scrub your gemstone with the toothbrush, concentrating on areas where dust and dirt can build up. Check behind the stone and around the prongs and scrub away any residue. Rinse and pat your jewelry dry with a soft, lint free cloth and your gemstone will sparkle like new. It's important to note that you should not scrub your jewelry near a sink with an open drain.

Cleaning Organic Gemstones

Organic gemstones like pearls, amber and coral require extra care. Their porous surfaces make them extra sensitive to chemicals so avoid exposing them to any products that could cause damage. Some of these include hair spray, perfume and lotion. In order to clean organic gemstones, simply wipe them down with a soft cloth.

Maintaining Your Gemstone's Sparkle

There are several ways you can avoid exposing your gemstone to harmful substances. Remember to remove your jewelry before applying hair products and makeup and before exercising. You also may want to remove your jewelry before working with your hands and exposing your precious gemstones to any unwanted substances.

Your dazzling gemstone will stand the test of time if you continue caring for and cleaning it regularly. Give it a good scrub now and then and it will sparkle for years to come.
